How to Start Running: 5 Tips for Beginners-Universitas Surabaya Maju Terus

how-to-run
Try the walk-run training method
The biggest misconception about running is that you need to run continuously from start to finish. Instead of running full out and getting discouraged, include some walks in your run. On my long runs for marathon training, I sometimes alternate nine minutes of running with one minute of walking. I don’t lazily walk during that minute, though—I speed-walk to keep my heart pumping and my muscles moving. Beginner runners can alternate two minutes of running with one minute of walking. Over time, you can gradually increase the ratio of running to walking a minute at a time until you’ve worked up to longer distances.
Keep a running log
I maintain a running log to track my progress and keep me motivated. Record the basic information about your runs: distance, time, type of workout, and how you felt during and afterward. If you’re looking to lose weight, you can also note your progress. It’s extremely motivating to see the increase in mileage and decrease in time as you go on.
Set goals and make a plan
Running a marathon is a big goal, but it’s something that I’ve always wanted to do. One of the best ways to keep motivated is to set attainable goals for yourself. This can be anything: Sign up for and complete a 5K, set a new personal record on your next 10K, run three days per week. Once you have set your goal, create a “game plan” to achieve it. I use the marathon training plan from Team In Training. You can find tons of running guides online to help you achieve your next goal.
Remember that everyone has a bad run
If things don’t go exactly as planned, don’t get discouraged. Even the best runners have bad runs! Reflect on what you learned from the experience and ask yourself what you can do differently. Maybe you started too quickly, or didn’t eat properly before your run. Go out next time stronger and more confident in your abilities.
Listen to your body
Running is hard on your body. You’re bound to feel tired and sore after a run, which is normal to an extent. Listen to your body when your pain is beyond normal, and take it easy. For me, this means cutting back on my training or incorporating more cross-training into my schedule.

Dalam buku The Healing Power of Vitamins, Minerals, and Herbs, disebutkan vitamin A adalah vitamin yang penting untuk mengontrol produksi sebum.

Sumber-sumber utamaVitamin A

4 Ways Yoga Relieves Low Back Pain-Universitas Surabaya Maju Terus

Yoga is one of the nondrug, nonsurgical therapies that has been shown to benefit back pain. In 2005 a study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine found that a yoga program was more effective in treating low back pain than another exercise regimen or educating yourself about proper back care. In October 2007 the American College of Physicians and the American Pain Society released guidelines that recommend therapies that include massage, Viniyoga (a gentle, therapeutic yoga style), acupuncture, and spinal manipulation for persistent back pain.

According to Timothy McCall, MD, the medical editor of Yoga Journal, yoga can enable patients to do the following.
  • Strengthen weak muscles
  • Increase flexibility
  • Improve oxygenation to body tissue
  • Shift the balance of the autonomic nervous system from the sympathetic "fight or flight" response to the parasympathetic "rest and digest" state
All of those changes can help support the musculoskeletal system and bring pain relief, but beyond those physical improvements, Dr. McCall believes that the greatest benefit yoga can provide to patients is in their mind.

"In yoga there is a difference between pain and suffering. Pain is often caused by physical things, but the mind fuels the fires of suffering by thinking about it and coming to negative conclusions, which activates your stress response system," says Dr. McCall. "When you do meditation or breathing practices, you start to see the role that the mind plays. Advanced meditators can modulate their pain. They know the pain is there, but they don't react to it the same way."

Superfoods You Need Now-Universitas Surabaya Maju Terus

What is a superfood?

Though there is no legal or medical definition, superfoods are nutrient powerhouses that pack large doses of antioxidants, polyphenols, vitamins, and minerals. Eating them may reduce the risk of chronic disease, and prolong life, and people who eat more of them are healthier and thinner than those who don't. Read about several foods that are considered super, what health benefits they offer, and how to fit them into your diet.

Tomatoes

Why they're super: They contain lycopene, an antioxidant rarely found in other foods. Studies suggest that it could protect the skin against harmful UV rays, prevent certain cancers, and lower cholesterol. Plus, tomatoes contain high amounts of potassium, fiber, and vitamin C.

Get your tomatoes with tasty ALT (Avocado, Lettuce, and Tomato) Sandwiches, which contain another superfood—avocado!

Blueberries

Why they're super: These berries are full of phytonutrients that neutralize free radicals (agents that cause aging and cell damage). The antioxidants in these berries may also protect against cancer and reduce the effects of age-related conditions such as Alzheimer's disease or dementia.

Instead of simply sprinkling blueberries in your yogurt, try this warm Banana Blueberry Bread right out of the oven. Or, get similar health benefits by trying raspberries in these Raspberry-Cream Cheese Muffins.

Kale

Why it's super: Move over spinach, you've got some fierce competition. Kale contains a type of phytonutrient that appears to lessen the occurrence of a wide variety of cancers, including breast and ovarian. Though scientists are still studying why this happens, they believe the phytonutrients in kale trigger the liver to produce enzymes that neutralize potentially cancer-causing substances.

Add some taste to the earthy flavor of this vegetable by trying Kale With Caramelized Onion.

Black beans

Why they're super: A cup of black beans packs 15 grams of protein, with none of the artery-clogging saturated fat found in meat. Plus, they're full of heart-healthy fiber, antioxidants, and energy-boosting iron.

Make pasta a little healthier by trying these Black-Bean Lasagna Rolls

Broccoli

Why it's super: Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli contain phytonutrients that may suppress the growth of tumors and reduce cancer risk. One cup of this veggie powerhouse will supply you with your daily dose of immunity-boosting vitamin C and a large percentage of folic acid.

Try this delicious Asian spin: Broccoli Salad With Sesame Dressing and Cashews.

Salmon

Why it's super: Salmon contains omega-3 fatty acids, which the body cannot produce by itself. These fatty acids reduce inflammation, improve circulation, increase the ratio of good to bad cholesterol, and may slash cancer risk. Salmon is a rich source of selenium, which helps prevent cell damage, and several B vitamins.

Try a new tangy twist on your favorite fish: Apple and Horseradish-Glazed Salmon.

Oats

Why they're super: Full of fiber, oats are a rich source of magnesium, potassium, and phytonutrients. They contain a special type of fiber that helps to lower cholesterol and prevent heart disease. Magnesium works to regulate blood-sugar levels, and research suggests that eating whole-grain oats may reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.

Get your daily dose of oats with these delicious cookies: Oatmeal-Date-Chocolate Cookie.

Turn Your Bedroom Into a Comfortable, Calming Sleep Haven: 5 Rules to Follow-Universitas Surabaya Maju Terus

Make your room dark

Dim the lights while you get ready for bed, or turn off bright overhead lamps and switch to a soft, bedside lamp. Your body is programmed to sleep when it's dark, so you can encourage that rhythm by easing into nighttime.
Light inhibits the secretion of melatonin, a hormone that naturally promotes sleep. "Even if you doze off, light can be detected through your eyelids—and your brain won't produce melatonin if it's confused between night and day," says Joyce Walsleben, PhD, associate professor at the New York University School of Medicine. "You want as much darkness in your bedroom as you can handle without tripping over things."

Keep your room dark

Hide digital clocks and glowing electronics from view. Put a night-light in your hallway or bathroom in case nature calls at 2 a.m.; that's better than turning on a ceiling light, which would disrupt melatonin levels. And if street lamps or moonlight shines in from outside, consider installing heavy window shades or wearing a dark sleep mask.

Keep your room cool

Your body temperature naturally drops as you drift into sleep, so cooling down your bedroom can jump start the process and make it easier to doze off. Most experts advise setting your thermostat 5° to 10° lower than your average daytime temperature.

"It's different for every person, but your bedroom should probably be under 70°," says Walsleben. Menopausal women experiencing hot flashes—or those who like to bundle up in blankets—may want to aim even lower.

Keep your room quiet

If your bedroom is victim to unwelcome sounds of ambulances, catfights, or whipping winds, a thick rug and heavy blinds might help buffer the noise. If not, try a white noise machine or soothing CDs that can drown out disruptions, or even earplugs to muffle the sound completely. If you do fall asleep to music, use a player with a "sleep" function that can shut down automatically after 30 or 60 minutes, recommends William C. Dement, MD, professor of psychiatry at Stanford University and author of The Promise of Sleep. As your body transitions through different stages of sleep, unexpected noise may wake you during shallower cycles

Keep your room calm

After you've achieved these conditions, get rid of anything stimulating that distracts from the room's main purposes: sleep and sex. That means no treadmill, no television or computer, and no reminders of anything stressful. Adding personal mementos, calming color schemes, and soothing sights and sounds—like chronic pain patient Patricia Skiba's rock garden and water fountain, for example—will also make your bedroom a more inviting place to rest and relax.

7 Tips for the Best Sleep Ever-Universitas Surabaya Maju Terus

You’ve done all the obvious stuff—cut out late-night caffeine, made sure your bedroom is dark and cozy, avoided scary movies or struggling with your to-do list right before bed. So why are you still tossing and turning? “Certain habits you’re unaware of could be sabotaging your sleep,” says Kristen L. Knutson, PhD, assistant professor and sleep specialist at the University of Chicago’s Department of Medicine.

Say so long to sleep

And, as you may know, lack of shut-eye doesn’t just leave you foggy the next day: Chronic, long-term insufficient sleep ups your odds of diabetes, depression, cardiovascular disease, even weight gain. So what to do? Try these unexpected tweaks, and wake up feeling incredibly well-rested.

Halt your afternoon habit

It’s a no-brainer that drinking coffee or tea right before you hit the sack won’t do you any sleep favors. But you also need to watch your afternoon drinks, says Joan Salge Blake, RD, a clinical associate professor at Boston University. Love your 4 p.m. peach tea? It’s got caffeine, and so do some flavored waters and even orange sodas, Blake warns. Check the labels on your favorite midday drinks—any that boast energy-boosting benefits are likely culprits. Then, if possible, stop sipping them by 2 p.m., so there’s time for their effects to wear off. Naturally, coffee drinks pack a real wallop, so stay away from them after lunch.

Choose sleep superfoods

While it’s important to avoid a big, heavy meal right before bed (a full stomach will disturb your sleep), some foods may actually help you snooze, Blake says. If you’ve had a few nights of restless sleep, make a light whole-wheat-pasta dish with fresh vegetables, a little diced chicken breast, tomato sauce, and a sprinkle of Parmesan for dinner. This meal contains a snooze-friendly combination of protein and tryptophan, an amino acid that converts to sleep-promoting serotonin in the body.

If your stomach’s growling late at night, try a small bowl of cottage cheese with banana slices, another dish that serves up tryptophan. Other combos of healthy carbs and protein, such as milk and graham crackers or yogurt sprinkled with cereal, will also do the trick.

Sip wine sooner

Even though a nightcap may help you relax and fall asleep faster, it’ll make the second half of your sleep cycle restless and unsatisfying. Alcohol decreases deep sleep and increases arousals from sleep, says John E. Brown, MD, an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Maryland. If you like a glass of wine in the evening, have it with dinner—around 6 p.m. rather than 11—and drink in moderation, so it’ll wear off by the time you lie down.

Take an early soak

Like to unwind in the tub before you snooze? Surprisingly, a hot bath might make it harder for you to drift off: Doing anything that raises your body temperature too close to bedtime may actually hinder you from falling asleep, because your body needs to cool to a certain temperature in order to reach a sound slumber, says J. Todd Arnedt, PhD, director of the University of Michigan Behavioral Sleep Medicine Program. That doesn’t mean you can’t soak after a rough day—when you get home from work, not right before turning in.

Stretch for sleep

Getting in a little gentle, restorative yoga before you hit the sack can help put your mind at ease, steady your breath, and reduce muscle tension without revving up your heart.

Try this restful Reclined Butterfly pose from Tanya Boulton, managing teacher at Pure Yoga East in New York City:

Lie on your back with the soles of your feet together and your knees bent and dropping toward the floor. Place your arms, palms up, by your sides, keeping your shoulders back and your chest open. Close your eyes and inhale through your nose while slowly counting to four, then exhale while counting back down to one. Continue for 10 minutes, or as long as it takes you to feel fully relaxed.

Set the mood for slumber

Keeping your room dark while you sleep is a great start, but bringing the lights down before bed is also important. “Bright light too close to bedtime can make it hard to fall asleep,” Arnedt says. That’s because dimness signals the biological clock that it’s time to wind down, while bright light says “daytime!” Swap out überbright bedroom bulbs for low-watt ones, or install a dimmer switch and keep it low. Like to read in bed? Do it in the lowest light that’s still comfortable.

Ban your BlackBerry

Need to send out one last e-mail before you “officially” turn in? Not so fast. Typing in bed can wind you up, so when you do unplug, it will be harder to fall asleep, Knutson says. “It’s possible that even the vibration of a BlackBerry could disturb sleep if a person is cued to hear or respond to it,” she says.

For tech-free zzz’s, disconnect an hour before bed, turn your smartphone off, and put any gadgets on an out-of-reach dresser or in another room so you won’t be able to grab it if you get the late-night urge. Also, invest in a real alarm clock (using your cell will only give you another excuse to keep it close)—and get ready to wake up feeling so refreshed that you won’t even need to press snooze.

Mengapa Tidak Sarapan?

Tetapi, walau menyadari pentingnya sarapan.

4 Cool Uses for Aloe-Universitas Surabaya Maju Terus

This houseplant is great for relieving sunburn—and that’s just the beginning of its health and beauty superpowers.

Mouth Soother

Treat those pesky canker and cold sores naturally with a dab of aloe, the Academy of General Dentistry suggests. The plant’s glycoproteins and polysaccharides fight pain and help the sores heal faster—without stinging or an icky taste.

Hair Revitalizer

Love the pool, but hate how the chlorine dries out your locks? Once a week, use this pre-shampoo treatment from Lina Hanson, author of Eco-Beautiful—The Ultimate Guide to Natural Beauty and Wellness.

Combine 1/2 cup aloe vera gel, 1/2 cup Castile soap, and 1/2 teaspoon jojoba oil; apply to scalp and hair. Leave in for 10 minutes; rinse, shampoo, and condition, as usual. Aloe’s vitamins C and E thoroughly nourish damaged hair.

Feet Treat

Prevent dry scaly feet with this scrub from Lauren Cox’s Eco Beauty. Stir together 1/2 cup brown sugar, 2 tablespoons lemon juice, 2 tablespoons aloe vera gel, and 1 teaspoon coconut oil.

Massage 2 tablespoons onto each foot, especially on rough areas. The aloe and coconut oil soften and soothe, the brown sugar exfoliates, and the lemon juice brightens skin.

Scar Minimizer

Heal small cuts, nicks, and burns with aloe after washing them with soap and water. Aloe’s allantoin stimulates new cell growth, which can help prevent later scarring, says Alan Logan, a naturopathic physician and the author of The Clear Skin Diet.

Keep your aloe plant in the kitchen to soothe minor burns fast.
